Personal Consultation & Advisory

Thoughtful guidance for life's important questions

One-on-one consultations drawing on Islamic learning, pastoral experience, and practical judgment — for those who want considered, candid guidance, not generic answers.

The approach

This is not motivational coaching. It is not therapy. It is not a fatwa service. It is a consultation — a structured conversation with someone who brings Islamic learning, years of pastoral experience, and a commitment to careful, honest thinking.

Every situation is approached seriously: drawing on what I have studied and what I have encountered, not offering reassurance for its own sake, and not retreating into vague generalities when something specific needs to be said.

Sometimes that means reassurance. Sometimes a different perspective. And sometimes it means hearing something you may not initially want to hear.

The underlying principle

الدين النصيحة

Al-dīn al-naṣīḥa — “Religion is sincere counsel.” (The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The obligation of naṣīḥa — honest, well-wishing counsel — is the foundation this service is built on. Genuine advice means saying what is true and useful, not what is comfortable.

About

The consultant — Bilal Mirza

From 2011 to 2022, I served as the Muslim chaplain at Babson College, working with students and members of the wider community on questions of faith, identity, personal decisions, relationships, and the challenges of navigating contemporary institutional and social environments as a Muslim.

Alongside that work, I pursued advanced Islamic studies through traditional channels, with continued study in Türkiye in Islamic jurisprudence, legal theory, and theology. I have nearly two decades of experience delivering khutbahs, lectures, and religious instruction across the United States, and have been engaged in individual mentorship throughout that time.

What I bring to this work is grounded in careful listening, intellectual honesty, and an understanding of practical realities. I am not interested in telling people what they want to hear. I am interested in helping them think through what is actually in front of them.

This is not therapy and it is not a fatwa service. It is a conversation with someone who has spent years thinking carefully about Islam, about how people navigate difficult circumstances, and about what it means to give and receive genuine counsel.

Areas of Consultation

Areas of Consultation

Consultations are not limited to one subject area. Most meaningful situations involve several at once.

Islamic Questions & Learning Guidance
Questions about Islamic practice, belief, and jurisprudence — including those that involve genuine scholarly disagreement or personal uncertainty. Guidance on how to approach Islamic learning: where to begin, how to evaluate sources, and how to navigate the landscape of contemporary Islamic scholarship.
Personal & Family Matters
Navigating difficult family dynamics, intergenerational tensions, and situations where family expectations conflict with personal values or circumstances. This includes matters involving extended family, community pressure, and culturally specific challenges that are rarely addressed directly.
Education, Career & Life Direction
Decisions about educational paths, career choices, and broader questions of direction and purpose. This includes situations where financial pressure, family expectations, and personal conviction are pointing in different directions — and where someone needs help thinking clearly rather than being told what to do.
Marriage & Relationships
Pre-marriage questions, the process of finding a spouse, navigating family involvement in marriage decisions, and questions that arise within marriages. This includes situations that are difficult to discuss openly — with family, with an imam, or in a standard counselling context.
Personal Advisory & Guidance
Situations that do not fit neatly into any category — personal dilemmas, ethical questions, matters of conscience, or circumstances where someone simply needs a thoughtful, honest interlocutor rather than a fixed framework or a predetermined answer.
Not sure if your situation fits? The free suitability call exists precisely for this. It is a brief conversation to determine whether a consultation would be useful — with no commitment required.

Questions

Common questions

Who is this for?
This service is for adults who have a specific situation, question, or decision they want to think through carefully with someone who brings Islamic learning and pastoral experience to the conversation. It is not a crisis service, and it is not a substitute for therapy or medical care. If you are unsure whether this is the right fit, the suitability call is the place to start.
Is this therapy?
No. This is not therapy, counselling, or mental health support. It is a consultation — a structured, substantive conversation with someone who brings Islamic learning and pastoral experience to bear on a specific situation. If what you are dealing with is a mental health matter, I will say so and can discuss appropriate referrals. The two things can coexist: someone can be in therapy and also have a question that belongs in a consultation like this.
Is this a fatwa service?
No. I will engage seriously with Islamic legal and theological questions, and the conversation will draw on fiqh where relevant. But the aim is not to issue a formal legal ruling. It is to help you think through your situation carefully, with access to the relevant Islamic knowledge and genuine engagement with the particulars of what you are facing.
What if my situation falls outside the scope of this service?
If I cannot help with something — because it falls into a domain that requires a different kind of professional, or because a situation needs more than a consultation can provide — I will say so directly. The suitability call exists partly for this reason: to determine whether a consultation is the right fit before committing to a session.
What happens if I need more than one session?
You can book additional sessions individually, or enquire about the four-week package (four 60-minute sessions at $550, normally one per week). The package is designed for situations that benefit from continuity and follow-up across several weeks — where one conversation is unlikely to be sufficient. Individual value is $600; the package saving is $50.
Is this confidential?
Yes. What is discussed in a consultation is treated as confidential. I do not share what clients tell me with their families, communities, institutions, or anyone else. The exception is a genuine risk of serious harm — the same standard that applies in any professional pastoral or advisory context.
Do I have to be Muslim?
No. The service draws on Islamic learning and is shaped by an Islamic ethical framework, but it is open to anyone who finds that orientation useful for their situation. Some non-Muslim clients have sought consultations on questions relating to Islam, to interfaith relationships, or simply because they wanted a thoughtful perspective from outside the frameworks they were already familiar with.
